Bought a house? Time to refresh your new kitchen
So you just bought a new house – congratulations. Thinking about moving in, but your kitchen looks outdated?
Time for changes. Let’s start with kitchen cabinets.
Refacing or Replacing – this is the question
We asked experts from Kitchen Craftsmen Australia: https://www.kitchencraftsmen.com.au/kitchen/kitchen-cabinets/ what are the trends and what should be taken into account. Refacing is very popular these days mostly because is not as expensive as paying for whole new set of cabinetry. To be sure if your kitchen cabinets might be refaced, you need to book a consultation with a kitchen design expert. Depending on the design and materials used it might be not possible to get this done. If it is – you are lucky and you can save some money – changing the fronts is way cheaper than replacing the whole cabinetry in your kitchen.
1. Cabinetry in your kitchen is cheap
Moved to a home with budget low end cabinets? Well, in this particular case saving money and trying to fix this with refacing won’t be a wise choise. You will spend funds and end up with the same cheap junk you already have. Yes, it migh look better, but the construction and durability won’t change.
2.Used or abused?
Sometimes the cabinetry can be quality build, but damaged to the point when any restoration is not possible – it might be damaged by water, rotted or just cover with mold. I also can be damaged by pets – covered with bites, or scratches. In these cases, although you have a nice cabinetry – well, cabinetry which was nice and expensive years ago, now is beyond repair at any reasonable cost.
3.Drastic change to the kitchen layout
Changing the cabinet fronts will make sense when your kitchen layout won’t change significantly. If you are after some major changes, you will need to design and build a new set of cabinets. In some cases people undertake partial change of the layout – and in this case you might get away with refacing cabinets on the remaining part and make new cabinets for the added part.
4. Box of metal
Back in the day, metal cabinets with metal framing were pretty popular. Mainly because of their durability. Nowadays these onese are becoming pretty rare and consider obsolete – moreover – these cabinets are not the easiest to work with when it comes to refacing. In this case we would advise to design and build a news set of cabinets from scratch. If you are somehow lile the look of metal cabinetry, you could consider using cabinet doors which look like a stainless steel. They might match your kitchen appliances, however they will give your kitchen a cold, more commercial type of the look.
5.Funky smells
Some cabinets might smell badly – this can happen due to their age and humidity, lack of ventilation in the kitchen or any other reasons. Sometimes it might be really hard or almost impossible to get rid of unwanted smells and in these cases getting a new cabinets is the only reasonable option. Yes, it might sound expensivem, but belive us – you can fix the problem straight away and avoid weeks of cleaning & checking if the smell is gone.
